The toned orange of rust is the result of corrosion. Corrosion is the transformation of a material into an unusable form due to the environment. Damaging material dissolves or otherwise reacts with the environment. This according to Wikipedia. That brilliantly bright orange that fascinates when viewed through glasses of the aesthetician is degeneration, ruining. It is also probably the secret of the attraction of color, the destructive beauty.

Eeva-Liisa Manner’s play Burnt Orange also has the same destructive beauty, longing, melancholy and sadness. I remember seeing it on stage sometime in my sensitive youth. The work remained on my mind tormenting. The burnt orange of the play is a description of the mind condemned to insanity. The young girl protagonist remains as a prisoner of childhood experiences, punished by a harsh mother, assault and rape, unlovingness, and loss of hope. In the work, colors play a significant role. The burnt orange of the name varies in the concrete color of the burning sensation, the arson, the color of the protagonist’s hair, and the silk costume. Another colored character is the Therapist in the play, as a cold cool blue counterforce who eventually surrenders to his patient and lets her slip into madness. Judgment is set by the normative environment, family, and therapist. The text doubts the legitimacy of the verdict, however, whether it was just the incompetence and surrender of the therapist, the mother’s incomprehension and own anxiety, the father’s softness, and his giving up. In the work, the pressing feeling is caused by fate, interpersonal relationships, anxieties, inherited traumas and their long shadows, as well as the powerlessness in front of them. Some kind of corrosive force in the material itself.

In Tampere, I also wondered about those rusty, bright orange iron cottages along the city. In my own neighborhood, the cottage is a bit of a confusing sight. It was revealed that these are electrical centers connected to the tramway and apparently they have been intentionally left as victims of corrosion. Great idea, whoever is behind it. The cottages look stunning in a flawless environment where the summer day includes a constant rustle of lawn mowers and trimmers.

In the studio, of course, rust blooms in the most diverse forms. I also found for my use old tempera pigments which are earth tones (rust), red ocher, umber, sienna. I have never thought of tempera painting as in this article as biblical, deeply related to our culture. Iron-bearing red ocher, the land or Adam (called ’dm,’ Adam, red clay, or primordial human) mixed with the egg yolk, or soul or spirit, located in that bird’s embryo (the bird being the symbol for πνεῦμα, pnuema, spirit, soul, or breath). Color is not a digital Pantone code but a messy mud, a substance with a soul, a geography, a history and a cultural point in us humans.

Ruosteen murrettu oranssi on korroosion tulosta. Korroosio on ympäristön vaikutuksesta tapahtuvaa materiaalin muuttumista käyttökelvottomaan muotoon. Vahingoittuva materiaali liukenee tai muuten reagoi ympäristön kanssa. Näin siis Wikipedian mukaan. Tuo loistavan kirkas oranssi, joka kiehtoo esteetikon silmälaseilla tarkasteltuna, on rappeutumista, pilalle menemistä. Siinä lienee myös värin vetovoiman salaisuus, tuhoava kauneus.

Samaa tuhoavaa kauneutta, haikeutta, melankoliaa ja surua on myös Eeva-Liisa Mannerin näytelmässä Poltettu oranssi. Muistelen nähneeni sen näyttämöllä jossain herkässä nuoruudessani. Teos jäi mielenpohjalle kaihertamaan. Näytelmän poltettu oranssi on hulluteen tuomitun mielen kuvaus. Nuori päähenkilö jää lapsuuden kokemusten vangiksi, ankaran äidin, pahoinpitelyn ja raiskauksen, rakkaudettomuuden ja toivon menettämisen rankaisemaksi. Teoksessa värit ovat merkittävässä roolissa. Jo nimen poltettu oranssi vaihtelee polttavan tunteen, tuhopolton, päähenkilön hiusten värin sekä silkkipuvun konkreettisena värinä. Toinen värillinen hahmo on näytelmän terapeutti, kylmän viileänä sinisenä vastavoimana, joka lopulta luovuttaa potilaastaan ja päästää tämän luisumaan hulluuteen. Tuomio on normatiivisen ympäristön, perheen ja terapeutin asettama. Tekstissä epäillään tuomion oikeutusta, oliko kyseessä kuitenkin vain terapeutin taitamattomuus ja luovuttaminen, äidin ymmärtämättömyys ja oma ahdistus, isän periksi antaminen ja pehmeys. Teoksessa puristavan tunteen aiheuttaa kohtalo, syntymässä asetetut ihmissuhteet, ahdistukset, perityt traumat ja niiden pitkät varjot sekä voimattomuus niiden edessä. Jonkinlainen syövyttävä voima materiaalissa itsessään.

Tampereella ihmettelin myös noita ruostuneita, kirkkaan oranssiksi muuttuneita rautamökkejä pitkin kaupunkia. Omassa lähikorttelissani mökki on hieman hämmentävä näky. Paljastui, että kyseessä ovat raitiotiehen liittyvät sähkökeskukset ja ilmeisesti ne on tarkoituksella jätetty korroosion uhreiksi. Hieno veto, kuka lieneekään idean takana. Tönöt näyttävät upeilta virheettömyyteen pyrkivässä ympäristössä, jossa kesäpäivään kuuluu jatkuva ruohonleikkuukoneiden ja trimmereiden pärinä.

Työhuoneella ruoste tietenkin kukkii mitä moninaisimmissa muodoissa. Löysin myös käyttööni vanhat temperapigmentit, jotka ovat maavärejä (ruostetta), punaokraa, umbraa, siennaa. Temperamaalausta en ole ajatellutkaan aiemmin kuten tässä artikkelissa raamatullisena, syvälle kulttuuriimme liittyvänä. Rautapitoinen punaokra, maa eli Aatami (called ‘dm, “Adam, red clay, or primordial human) sekoitettuna munan keltuaiseen eli sieluun tai henkeen, joka sijaitsee tuossa linnun alkiossa (the bird being the symbol for πνεῦμα, pnuema, spirit, soul, or breath).
