The Finnish Defense Forces’ forest pattern M05, or pickle salad, has served as a domestic camouflage. In summary, it contains the colors of the Finnish forest as scientifically precisely defined. The pattern was released for civilian use in 2016. Alongside it, a frost pattern has been developed in which the brightest green has been replaced with gray and the overall tone is much more soft and muted. When you look at that terrain, you recognize well those shades. Of course, there is still a domestic snow-covered white pattern of khaki flavored with beige-green color. After all, that former M62 visible in the “duck” (old formless cap used in army as a symbol of shame for those, who have lost their official cap) is somewhat soft and comfortably gentle. Of course, the colors have also faded in use and washing.

When traveling in some countries, it’s good to remember that the army camo pattern is even banned and somewhere it can evoke nasty connotations. There are surprisingly many countries such as Jamaica, Nigeria or Saudi Arabia. (In Finland the military service is compulsory and you take it as a part of young men’s life.) You may not think about how strong emotions and connotations are associated with this pattern and also khaki as a color. So the mind-blowing color doesn’t have to be a glowing red, orange, or bright purple to raise a passion, it might be a folded and muted terrain green.

Suomen puolustusvoimien metsäkuosi M05 eli kurkkusalaatti on palvellut kotimaisena camouflagena. Siinä on tiivistettynä suomalaisen metsän värit tieteellisen tarkasti määriteltyinä. Kuosi vapautui siviilikäyttöön vuonna 2016. Sen rinnalle on kehitetty pakkaskuosi, jossa kirkkain vihreä on korvattu harmaalla ja yleissävy on paljon hillitympi ja taitettu. Kun tuota maastoa katselee, niin hyvinkin tunnistaa nuo sävyt. Tietenkin on vielä kotimainen lumipuvun valkopitoinen khakin beigenvihertävällä värillä maustettu kuosi. Onhan tuo entinen ”sorsassa” (ryhditön lätsä) näkyvä M62 jokseenkin pehmoinen ja mukavan lempeä. Värit tietenkin ovat myös käytöissä ja pesuissa haalistuneet.

Joissain maissa matkatessa on hyvä muistaa, että armeijan camo-kuosi on jopa kielletty ja muuallakin se saattaa herättää ikäviä mielleyhtymiä. Tällaisia maita on yllättävän monta kuten Jamaika, Nigeria tai Saudi-Arabia. Tuota ei ehkä tule ajatelleeksi miten voimakkaita tunteita ja mielikuvia tähän kuosiin ja myös khakiin värinä liittyy. Mieltä kuohuttavan värin ei siis tarvitse olla kiihkoa nostattava hehkuvan punainen, oranssi tai räikeän violetti, se saattaakin olla taitettu ja vaimennettu maastovihreä.
